Stunning Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera
30 September 2008
To celebrate the launch of an all-new Lambo, Vijay Pattni looks at the sensational limited edition Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera.
Most people probably wouldn’t complain about a Ferrari– but Ferrucio Lamborghini wasn’t ‘most people’.
The Italian engineer – who started out building tractors – felt his Ferrari could do with a better clutch and took it back to the father of Ferrari, Enzo – who batted him away and said: “What you gonna do?”
Ferrucio was furious. He stormed off and sat down to work on his own designs for a supercar – one that would take the smile off Enzo’s face and replace it with a big tyremark.
And today the battle between the Italian stallions rages on – and one of the newest recruits to fight Lamborghini’s cause is the Lamborghini Gallardo.
The Gallardo was launched in 2003 as a direct competitor to the Ferrari 360, and is the Lamborghini Murcielago’s baby brother – but there is nothing ‘baby’ about its performance.
Straight out of the box the standard Gallardo will happily churn out 490bhp from its 5-litre V10 engine, which steadily grew to a healthy 510bhp.
And thanks to its sensational sleek design, four-wheel-drive system and mid-engine layout, the Gallardo is one of the finest supercars in the world.
But Lamborghini wanted more – it wanted a harder, faster and more capable version of the Gallardo to compete with the Ferrari F430 Scuderia.
